Elephant Run

The End (5/23-6/4): Reflection & Synthesis
This week you will be finishing your books.  As you read I want you to think about how the book ends in relation to how it started. Imagine if you could create a memorial to honor something from this book.
1. How did the main character change?
2. What are the important ideas (conflicts, character traits, people, places) that you would want to include in your memorial?
3. How would these ideas be represented (what symbols, colors, materials, etc would you use)?

Posting assignment:
  1. Answer the questions listed above.
Post your idea of the most significant/important thing to memorialize from your book (consider both the perspective represented AND the main character). Explain WHY you would want to memorialize those traits, actions, etc.
  1. Respond to other posts by asking questions, providing memorial suggestions, or offering your opinion.

  1. One way Nick changed over the year he was in Burma because of all that he witnessed in the war and in a Japanese camp. One of the biggest conflicts in the book was Nick and his friends and dad were all captured and forced to do hard labor. If I were to create a memorial, I would have a elephant bell and the Burmese flag on a table.

    1. That does sound like a really cool memorial. I also agree with Harry that you should add a picture of Nick so people actually knew who the memorial was for

  2. I agree with you Kevin but I would've added a picture of Nick so people actually knew who the memorial was for. But I really like the idea of the elephant bell.

  3. Nick definitely changed through the book. At the beginning of the book Nick would listed he was not a bad kid and he is still a good kid but now he helps on the cattle farm he never really had to help out much before going to Burma. In the beginning he didn't know much about the life outside of a city or how to defend himself. Then he moved to Burma and they got invaded by the Japanese and he learned to defend himself.

  4. Mhm, although a picture of Nick was never found, that would have been a good idea.

  5. Mya changed quite a bit through out the book. At the beginning she was shy quite shy and didn't talk much but did what was asked. She really liked elephants and usually spent more time with them than her brother Indaw. But when he was captured with Nicks father she was all for talking and seeing what she could do to help get them out. If I was going to make a memorial for her I would put a picture of her with elephants carved into wood.

  6. Nick changed a lot from the beginning of the book to the end because when he first came to the elephant plantation he was so a little on the edge about the place but after awhile he got used to the place and when he really got tested was when a lot of people that he new and cared about got brought to the Japanese camps he wanted to do everything in his power to get them back. I want to make a memorial with nick surrounded around all the people he loves and cares about.
